3 ingredient cocktails have long been referred to as the ‘cocktail trinity’, the tried and tested technique of combining three classic ingredients: spirit, sweetener, and citrus.

  1. Spirit is the base over every cocktail, such as vodka, gin, tequila, rum or whiskey. This sets the flavour profile of the cocktail (as well as the all important alcoholic kick).
  2. Sweetener adds balance to the mix, usually in the form of simple syrup, honey, or fruit juice.
  3. Citrus is the refreshing punch that tops off the mix. The most common additions are lemon and lime juice, but more bitter twists such as grapefruit can really make your mix stand out.

Here are our top 7 super simple 3 ingredient cocktails that you can make at home.

1. Margarita

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz agave nectar

Mix all your ingredients in your cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into your glass. For a classic finish, use a salt rimmed glass with a slice of lime on the rim.

2. Whiskey Sour

  • 2 oz whiskey
  • ¾ oz lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass with ice, garnish with a citrus (such as a curled orange peel).

3. Negroni

  • 1 oz gin
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1 oz Campari

Add all of your ingredients into a whiskey glass (or lowball style glass). Stir well and garnish with an orange twist.

4. Daiquiri

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup

Mix all your ingredients together in your cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a slice of lime.

5. Moscow Mule

  • 2 oz vodka
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 4 oz ginger beer

Add your vodka and lime juice to a copper mug generously filled with ice. Top with your ginger beer and stir, garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint.

6. Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters

Mix your simple syrup and bitters in a glass (you can replace the simple syrup with a sugar cube for an authentic experience). Add your ice and the whiskey, and then gently stir.

7. Aperol Spritz

  • 3 oz Prosecco
  • 2 oz Aperol
  • 1 oz soda water

Pour your Prosecco and Aperol into a large glass (highball or wine) filled with ice. Top with the soda and then stir. Garnish with either a slice of orange or grapefruit.
